Over ten new .NET Gadgeteer modules are joining our family

GHI Electronics is glad to announce over ten new module additions to the .NET Gadgeteer family that will expand the limitless capabilities of .NET Gadgeteer platform and .NET Micro Framework even further.

VideoOut Module: A display module that supports both VGA and Analog Video RCA output. Capable of outputting 320x240, 640x480, and 800x600 resolutions. Adding a 60" TV is a one module away.
http://www.ghielectronics.com/catalog/product/356

OBD II Module: This module will allow you to communicate with any vehicle that supports OBDII. With this module, you can read statistics from your car such as RPM, Vehicle Speed, Fuel Type/Level and much more.
http://www.ghielectronics.com/catalog/product/365

HD44780 Display Module: Adds a very simple and quick way to connect 16x2 and 20x4 character displays. We will also have one (or more) options with display included as well.
http://www.ghielectronics.com/catalog/product/358

MaxO Module: A chain-able output extender. Through a single S-socket a developer can add 32 outputs for each module added. Only 4 of these modules will add 128 outputs to a single socket.
http://www.ghielectronics.com/catalog/product/361

IO60P16 Module: A single socket from mainboard will add 60 inputs/outputs with interrupt capability. Also, 16 of these pins can be PWM signals. The signals with PWM are exposed on header-placement so it is easy to add standard RC servo motors. Adding 16 servo motors was never easier.
http://www.ghielectronics.com/catalog/product/363

RED LED Matrix Module (DaisyLink): The on-board 50Mhz Cortex-M0 handles all the timing ad drawing leaving the system free to control many of these modules with minimal system resources. Thanks to Gadgeteer's dasylink protocol, this is all handled automatically by the system.
http://www.ghielectronics.com/catalog/product/370

Load Module: Seven digital switches capable of 3Amp 30V to control motors, relays and even solenoids.

FEZ Cerberus and FEZ Cerb40, small low-cost open source .NET Gadgeteer mainboards.

GHI Electronics is introducing a low-cost .NET Gadgeteer mainboard called FEZ Cerberus for $29.95. At the core, it hosts STM32F4 Cortex-M4 DSP 32-bit processor running at 168Mhz. This 100% open source and full-featured addition to the FEZ family allows for cost effective prototyping and eliminates the need for using low-end 8-bit development boards. Thanks to .NET Micro Framework (NETMF), full networking and complete file system support is part of the system. The mainboard can be programmed using C# or VisualBasic with complete debugging capabilities over a USB cable.

Engineering Manager Joe Issa believes open source is helping many developers achieve their goals in less time. He thanks Microsoft for the NETMF sources and Oberon Microsystems for contributing STM32F1 processor support. This gave GHI Electronics a head start in porting NETMF to STM32F4.

The 8 Gadgeteer sockets on FEZ Cerberus are packed with functionalities. "FEZ Cerberus is small and compact yet has many inputs and outputs to control a magnitude of different applications, especially in robotics and home automation," says Aron Phillips, NETMF Porting Lead, OSH Division.

FEZ Cerberus is also offered in a kit aimed at jump-starting users. This kit can be extended through the numerous available modules on the market.

GHI Electronics didn't stop at low-cost, we took the cost even lower. FEZ Cerb40 is a $24.95 NETMF board. Smaller than a stick of gum, FEZ Cerb40 uses the same processor and firmware as FEZ Cerberus but instead of exposing sockets, it exposes the processor pins in a DIP40 format. Non-Gadgeteer and Gadgeteer users alike will enjoy this board.

"We believe in Open Source Hardware and we are proud to have FEZ Cerberus and FEZ Cerb40 open," says Founder and CEO Gus Issa. This allows our TinyCLR.com and the open source communities to contribute to the firmware. It also opens doors for non-NETMF and non-Gadgeteer users to benefit from these powerful boards, thanks to the available JTAG pins.

FEZ Cerberus and FEZ Cerb40 are both in stock and available for sale. Please visit GHI Electronics catalog for .NET Gadgeteer at http://www.ghielectronics.com/catalog/category/265/

Android with GHI's .NET Micro Framework solutions

Android Open Accessory:
The Android 3.1 platform (also backported to Android 2.3.4) introduces Android Open Accessory support, which allows external USB hardware (an Android USB accessory) to interact with an Android-powered device in a special "accessory" mode. When an Android-powered powered device is in accessory mode, the connected accessory acts as the USB host (powers the bus and enumerates devices) and the Android-powered device acts as the USB device.
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/usb/adk.html

GHI Electronics' Solution
One of the various exclusive value-added features that GHI offers with .NET Micro Framework solutions is USB Host capability which is needed to access Android devices.
http://www.ghielectronics.com/profile/

Here is a sample App that our friend Blake made with our FEZ Domino board:
https://github.com/bcr/NetmfAndroidOpenAccessory is the .NET Micro Framework code.
https://github.com/bcr/HelloFez is the Android code.

Android Debug Bridge
Your android OS is older! no problem. RobotFreak provided an example on how to use Android Debugging Bridge to communicate with FEZ Domino:
http://code.google.com/p/robotfreak/wiki/FezBridge

Here is the complete thread discussing these capabilities with android and FEZ

SDK version 1.0.11 is online

It is finally here, the SDK with full Ethernet support for small FEZes. Not only that, the surprise feature is out. You can now use the USB port for debug and at the same time use it as a virtual serial port. USBClientController.StandardDevices.StartCDC_WithDebugging();
The first one to show a video of this new feature gets 500 points.

Please READ the release notes about changes and known issues.

Due to breaking changes in SDK, installing it will remove GHI's Visual Studio templates.
To resolve the issue, all previous GHI SDKs must be uninstalled before installing this version.

Edit: The documentation for the new CDC feature is explained under CDC class (USBC_CDC documentation), there is a section at the bottom where it explains CDC + debug and there is a separate driver for them.

FEZ Cobra on MSDN

Colin Miller wrote about how .NET Micro Framework (FEZ Cobra) fits together with desktop .NET Framework and Microsoft Windows Azure-hosted Web Services using DPWS (Devices Profile for Web Services):

Today, we see a proliferation of applications that include connected devices. In fact, the “Internet of Things” (devices connected over the Internet) is already estimated to be larger than the World Wide Web in terms of endpoints and is projected to grow to an order of magnitude larger in the next few years.

In the near future, we’ll be interacting with more intelligent devices instead of recognizable computers. Just look around your house. The things that can be usefully connected include your appliances (for energy management, software updates and maintenance); your car (for coordination on recharging your new electric vehicle with the grid, automatic testing and maintenance and software updates); your irrigation system (for scheduling based on weather reports and water management); your pets (to determine their location and configure invisible fencing); your thermostat (for remote control); and much more.

FEZ can play audio. You only need a wire!

How mush does it cost you to add audio playback to FEZ? It costs you a piece of wire! Yes that is all you need to play wav audio files. Now, this is not meant to play music but it is ideal if your product/project will need to voice out some commands or alerts.

Maybe dial a number or playback a message ... You can probably think of a million ways to use this.

Here is a little video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3HnikN-nLk

This will be added to the SDK coming next week and will be demoed at maker faire as well.

Native TCP/IP support and in-field update on all GHI-NETMF products

We have two new leading-edge features that add more to the GHI's long list of [italic]exclusive[/italic] features :)

1. WIZnet support. This is not an experimental driver but a commercially and professionally supported driver for your networking needs. It includes TCP server/client, UDP datagram and DNS. DHCP is coming soon too! The interface is standard .NET sockets so no learning curve is needed. All you have to do is initialize the wiznet driver with the correct IOs and that is it. Joe, our networking expert, will follow up with an example on how this is done.

2. We have added an in-field update feature that allows you to update the firmware remotely! Combine that with the new wiznet networking support and now your device can update itself from the internet. You can update from SD card or USB drive as well. This is all explained in documentation but more tutorials will come explaining it all. The community is also welcome to help us out with the tutorials and we will surly get you some experience points.

Known issue: Installing the SDK over the previous one works but will remove the templates for some reason! We recommend that you uninstall the old GHI SDK before installing the new one.

Do not forget to update the firmware [italic]and[/italic] the GHI assemblies in your project.

There are some more features and fixes that are all listed on the release notes http://www.tinyclr.com/release-notes-beta/
See the beta page for more details http://www.tinyclr.com/beta/

Note: Only experienced users have access to the beta download. A public release will be out in about two weeks.

Please only use the "Beta Release" board to discuss http://www.tinyclr.com/forum/12/946/

New Porting NETMF Book with open source firmware

For those of you who want full control over the software you are using, we are releasing an open source firmware for FEZ. We are calling it "FEZopen." Not only that, we are including a free ebook on porting NETMF. The book uses the $19.95 FEZ Panda to demonstrate porting NETMF but you can use any FEZ. Make sure to order your FEZ Panda soon.

The open source driver, FEZopen, includes UART, SPI, I2C, timers, threading and many more drivers making it complete for your deep customization and exciting projects.

Want to make your own hardware? We have EAGLE design files available online for every FEZ, feel free to make your own and load the FEZopen firmware on it.
The original propitiatory firmware still ships free on all FEZ products. It is up to the user whether he wants to keep the USBizi firmware or switch to FEZopen. Using the priority firmware allows us to have better version control and support for our commercial customers.

The new book and FEZopen firmware are still in development but they get you far enough in porting. Since this is all open source, we look forward to your contributions as well. Please visit the TinyCLR download page http://www.tinyclr.com/dl/

We now have lower cost shipping options

We are glad to say that we have added US. Postal Service (USPS) shipping option to our shopping cart. This is slower method for shipping but costs much less than FedEx. We still recommend FedEx for better delivery time and tracking numbers on all shipments but if all you are looking for is low cost shipping then we have more options for you.

Not only that, we have tweaked out the FedEx shipping do it should cost you few dollars less to ship using FedEx too.

Note that this is a brand new feature on our website so please let us know if you experience any problems with shipping options on shopping cart.

Also, USPS doesn't ship to all countries.

This is the USPS website http://www.usps.com/
