is it possible to setup a WIFI connection between two embedded master development sytems
without the need for an access point?

a of the shelve solution could be something like "google:Ethernet Air-Pack"

but i would like to use the embedded master with the microframework WIFI exapnsion.

yes it is possible to make an Ad-hoc connection but we currently do to support it. The WiFi support is still very new and there are plans to add more functionality in the future.

A currently available wireless TCP/IP communication between two EM is through PPP over ZigBee (IEEE 802.15.4).

Take a look at PPP section in User Manual and I believe there is an example code with SDK for Connecting two EM through PPP over serial (serial can be easily mapped to ZigBee, take a look at ZigBee examples on microframeworkprojects.com).
